02:41 am - New Journal I have created a new LiveJournal, mahannon. This is mainly because I am sick of the name xellos. So add me as a friend. I won't be posting here anymore. Does anyone know if I can easily move all my entries from this journal to the new one?

01:43 am - More about computers I'm still struggling with Slackware Linux configuration. Here is what I need to accomplish:
- Get sound card working. I've tried a lot of stuff, none of it has worked.
- Get mouse scroll wheel working. Very important. Tried a few things already.
- Get dhcpcd to run at boot time, so that I can use the internet without having to manually run it first.
- Get LILO to not wait 2 minutes before booting to LINUX. Should it even ask me if I just have one operating system?
- Figure out why the booting sometimes freezes at "cardmgr[74]: waiting on 2 sockets". cardmgr is the program that locates hardware and installs the drivers. If I unplug my network card and PS/2 mouse, it always gets past this line. With them plugged in, it sometimes gets past it, but sometimes not. Weird.
I have to get up at 7:30 tomorrow to go work with my CS360 class (all four of us) on the Athena cluster. I think I'll need a break from computers soon. Why we chose to work on Saturdays at 8:00 in the morning is beyond me. Maybe I'll take my laptop and discreetly start complaining about its problems in hopes that someone more knowledgeable (::cough::Skylar) will start giving out advice.
In the afternoon we are filming all my scenes in my friend's movie The Last Passion of Samurai Jesus which is the story of Jesus but horribly parodied and with Samurai elements as well. It really doesn't make any sense at all. Anyway, I am the main villian: Emperor Caesar. I have two scenes where I sit in the shadows and say some lines. Then I have a fight scene where Zombie (because he's already done the resurrection) Samurai Jesus kills me. Tomorrow night I think I will collapse on the floor and stay there for a while.
Unfortunately I have to get some work done this weekend. Some of it is for psg, so I will get paid for it. I have to figure out how to do timer events in Perl. I also have to work on a project in Graphics that deals with clipping and I have to figure out why my Parallel program isn't running so that I can do this week's assignment which is adding things to it. Those aren't due until Tuesday, though.
Now I need to sleep. Current Mood: drained Current Music: None...but working on it

01:31 am - Adventures in Computing Razael (my computer...I never named my computers until enabling file-sharing on the Earlham network, and I didn't really associate that with the name of my computer until after a while) had a serious failure on Monday night. As I was using it, the computer turned off. My train of though was: Oh no, the power went out...but the lights are still on. Oh no, the circuit that the outlet on the wall is on shut off...but the monitor's still on. Shit.........maybe I can turn the computer back on...nope. I suspected the power supply, and after asking some people who knew more about it confirmed this, I went out and bought a new one. Office Max didn't sell them, but pointed me towards some local computer stores. The first one didn't have the kind my computer needed. The second one only had one and it was used. I bought it for $20 and installed it. When I plugged in the power cord, it immediately started making an electrical buzzing noise, even though the computer wasn't turned on. I pushed the power button and Razael started up and booted. I was a little disturbed about the buzzing, which I couldn't hear anymore with the computer fans going. I used the computer for a few hours, and then shut it down to see if maybe the buzzing had stopped. It if hadn't I was going to call the computer store and ask them if they thought it was anything to be alarmed about. After the computer was turned off, I couldn't hear the buzz at all. I guess the noise was a result of the power supply sitting unused on a shelf for a while. When I came back later to use my computer again, it once again wouldn't turn on. So, either I had really bad luck and the used power supply I bought was close to failing, or there is something else wrong with my computer that is killing power supplies. I am inclined to believe the latter.
I have a working computer though! currentlymusing got a new laptop for christmas. Because her old laptop is too old to be worth anything and because she is totally awesome, she decided to give the laptop to me, since she wouldn't have any more use for it (this was decided weeks ago, not because of my computer dying). It sat around for a while because she had to get some files off of it before I could take it over. She did it this week and I now have a laptop (Dell Latitude, 333 Mhz Pentium Pro, 128 MB Ram, 11 Gb hard drive) that I installed Slackware 10.0 on. So for now, I have a computer that is a decent replacement for my derelict one, minus my mp3s and C/C++ code (and video games...but I wasn't playing those very much). Since the slackware network setup asks for a hostname for the computer, I was once again forced into naming it. It is called Wyvern.
On a different note, I figured out where I am living next year. For those of you reading this who aren't at Earlham, the housing process is done in a random drawing fashion. Each person is given a random number (1-500 for rising seniors, 500-1000 for juniors, etc.) and the person with the lowest number gets to chose first. I was lucky and my lottery number was 17. Since a lot of seniors live off campus or in campus houses, only four people who wanted singles were ahead of me. I am living in Hoerner 208 next year. Yes, I did choose Hoerner over Warren, Wilson, and Bundy. So :P Current Mood: content

06:16 pm - Christmas! Since my last entry the following things happened:
- I won the lottery but lost it all when a gorilla escaped from the zoo attacked me in feral fury. Luckily only the lottery ticket was destroyed and I got out unharmed.
- I became the leader of a no-name yet national gang and slowly began picking off crimelords until the gang's territory was unchallenged nationwide. The police crashed our victory party and took everyone but me out because...
- I was drafted by the CIA for a very important mission involving Berlin, remnants of the KGB, and a new nuclear submarine that can make coffee....turn the entire oceans into coffee, that is! While my plane was en route, the problem solved itself in the form of a very fortunately localized cholera outbreak.
</lu>
Wow. What an interesting few months. Now for my Christmas gettings: -Metroid Prime 2 (Video Game) -Prince of Persia: Warrior Within (VG) -Star Wars Trilogy DVDs -Airplane DVD -Gloves -Some amount of money

08:20 pm - You must obey these "random" numbers chosen by a computer and translated to Halloween costumes!! Some of these make a lot of sense. Some of these I don't want to think about. I apparently have mental problems of which I am unaware.

08:01 pm - That kid that looks like he's in high school has a weird hat School continues to march on. I dropped my Physics class, but still seem to have a lot of work to do. It may just my laziness. I have a Networks project due Monday that I haven't started. If anyone happens to have some code lying around that builds routing tables for network routers using Dijkstra's algorithm....
I have a plan to buy a laptop, but I don't think I will be able to get it as soon as I thought. After depositing birthday money and paycheck, I will still be about $500 short. I've heard Panther (Mac OS 10.3) has some bugs and problems, so I have been advised to wait until Tiger is out to buy the iBook, but it's not coming out until 2005. Then again, I may not have the money until then.
I did a little rearrangement of my room. It works better now. But there are still controller cords everywhere. And rolling them up is annoying and makes them twisty, especially with the Gamecube controllers. Maybe I should just buy Wavebirds. Are there wireless PS2 controllers?

11:13 pm Is anyone going to be in Munster in two weeks? It is my birthday (Oct 9) as well as Earlham's mid-semester break, and I will be home from the 7th to the Sundayth. If someone is in Munster then merriment will surely ensue.

07:42 pm - My first bad experience with Amazon.com Amazon.com has always shipped my orders promptly and I could (almost) count on the package arriving on the first day of the estimate window. Last month I pre-ordered Star Ocean (playstation game) from Amazon. I would expect the package to arrive the day the game comes out in stores, otherwise no one would preorder on amazon, they would go to a physical store. I know people who have preordered on Amazon and this has been true. With me, however, I just got the game today, 10 days after it arrived in stores. Worse yet, it shipped on Sep 3, 4 days after it arrived in stores. They didn't even bother to update the delivery estimate (it claimed I would get it on Sep 3 - Sep 4, eventhough it knew it hadn't shipped until Sep 3). In light of this, and the fact that I would have gotten a poster if I had preordered at EbGames, I will no longer preorder from Amazon. Thank you. Current Mood: disappointed

02:30 pm - So...much...DDR I have played more DDR the past two days than I have in the past year, I think. Yesterday afternoon, Skip was talking to Halli, who lives across the hall from me, and he decided that she had to see DDR, since she had never seen it before. So he invited me and the three of us went to the mall, where another kid was playing and was really good. One of the arrows on the right pad broke while we were playing, though.
After we got back, I decided to take a shower. Unfortunately, my soap had disappeared from the shelves in the bathroom, because people are jerks. I guess I'm keeping my stuff in my room this year. Most of the time I try to keep my stuff in the bathroom, there are obvious signs that people other than me are using my stuff.
I went to the bookstore and got a bar of soap and the last book I needed to buy for my classes. After a shower, I walked around and talked to people who I hadn't seen yet. When I was coming back from the dorm, Blanche was exiting. She had just arrived. I helped her move her stuff in. It turns our her roommate wasn't who she thought it would be, but she's still cool. We went to get fast food for dinner, and while coming back we saw a massive group of our friends who had come back from El Rodeo. Skip was among them, and still hadn't gotten his DDR fix for the day, so he and his roommate Grant set up DDR in the lobby of Bundy and we played for a long time. Random people kept showing up to play. Eventually, some of us decided it was too hot so we left to take a walk and ended up hanging out in Runyan for a little bit. When we came back, people were still playing DDR. But I was tired so it was time for less physically involving video games in my room.
Today has been slow so far. I had to get up early to go the enrollment confirmation. There was a guy there registering people to vote, so I did that, but since I'm filling out an absentee ballot, I have to photocopy my driver's license and mail it in. I wonder if I'll remember to do that.
I think I'll take a nap now. I haven't been feeling all that well today. I wish I could have my window open without cigarette fumes wafting in. Maybe if I turn my fan to blow out the window... Current Mood: blah
